Evelyn Joyce Abrams Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Evelyn Joyce Abrams passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on May 22, 2022. Evelyn was born on December 11, 1932, in Brooklyn, to Leon and Natalie (Sarner) Gutman, and grew up in New York before the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating from Central High School in Memphis, Evelyn attended the University of Alabama, where she met her husband and love of her life, Arnold. They were married in Memphis on May 31, 1953. After their wedding, Arnold was drafted into the Army and Evelyn accompanied him while he served in Germany. They traveled across Europe, and after his service, they returned to Memphis. They lived in many places in the U.S, including Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Connecticut, as well as eight years in Israel. Evelyn attended Texas Christian University and received degrees in Psychology and Education as well as a Special Education Certificate, all while raising four children. After graduating, Evelyn worked as a special education teacher at Parker Middle School and Nathan Hale Elementary in Fort Worth. She was president of B’nai B’rith, President of the Fort Worth Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee, and a fixture at the Dan Danziger Jewish Community Center. Evelyn also worked as the Director of Senior Services at the Ripy Senior Center in Fort Worth. Evelyn was an accomplished actor and director, appearing at Casa Manana, the TCU theater, the Scott Theater, and community theater in the Jewish Community Center. She also directed and starred in plays at the Tel Aviv Community Theater in Tel Aviv, Israel. Evelyn often enlisted her family into her plays, with Arnold doing set design and lights. Anyone that knew her knows that Evelyn's first passion was her family. Evelyn was a loving daughter, mother, wife, sister and aunt. She loved unconditionally. Words cannot express how special her spirit and love were to her family and to everyone that knew her. Evelyn is survived by her husband of 69 years, Arnold, her children David Abrams and daughter-in-law Robin Abrams, daughter Shari Ellsworth and son-in-law John Ellsworth, Michael Abrams and daughter-in-law Lalou Abrams, and Steven Abrams; her grandchildren Austin Ellsworth, Leah Ellsworth, Nathaniel Abrams, and Emmeline Abrams, her sister Luci Griggs, her niece Tami Kruger, her great niece Chloe, her nephew Bubba Griggs, her sister-in-law Marylin Geisser, her nephews Mark Geisser, Troy Giesser, and niece Jennifer Giesser. Flowers for the service are welcome, or a donation can be made to Meals on Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County in Evelyn Abrams' name.
