Dorothy Howell Owens, age 91, of Hurst, Texas passed away peacefully on May 22, 2011 at Emery J. Lilge Hospice House in Burleson, Tx. She was born on Nov. 17, 1919, in Dallas to her parents, Bennett Chester and Lida McCormack Howell. Dorothy was the oldest of 3 children. She married Albert Owens in Longview, Tx. on Dec. 11, 1941. They were married 33 years until his death when she was only 54.They had 1 child, Donnave. Dorothy attendend Kilgore Jr. College during 1939-40 where she worked with Gussie Nell Davis at the beginning of the famous Kilgore Rangerettes. She was a resident of Hurst for 57 years. Dorothy was one of the first members of Hurst Christian Church, joining in 1955. She loved all kinds of card games being a member, with Al, of a couples duplicate bridge club which lasted for over 30 years. After Al's death in 1974, she began working at The Lemon Tree Boutique in Hurst, making more friends and meshing the old with the new. Her family and friends were her priority and they all knew that! Her strength throughout her life was her faith in Jesus Christ and it enabled her to weather the early death of her husband, the loss of many wonderful friends and family members and the loss of independence that comes with old age. She maintained her sense of humor and dignity from beginning to end. Dorothy will be remembered by her children, Donnave and Jim Abt, grandchildren, Joel and Annette Abt and Ryan and Maggie Abt and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.. Predeceased in death by Albert, her husband, and her parents, Bennett and Lida Howell and her sister, Fanchon Freeze and brother, Bennett Howell, Jr..
